The Scientific Name for Tomatoes is solanum lycopersicumThere are at least 10,000 varieties of tomatoes. 

One pound of tomato seeds will produce about 140,000 tomato plants. China is the largest producer of tomatoes in the world, producing over 16% of all tomatoes.

The first tomato plants were planted in Greece by a Friar Francis in 1818, in the gardens of a Capuchin monastery at the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates (built in 335 B.C.) in Athens

1. Tomatoes originally came from Peru, where their Aztec name translated to plump thing with a navel.

2. The scientific name for tomato is Lycopersicon lycopersicum meaning wolf peach.  

3. Tomatoes increase in weight as they ripen, even after harvesting.

4. Tomatoes are the richest source of lycopene which is important for the health of the prostate gland in men.

5. They were first brought to Europe in the mid 1500’s. 

6. A tomato is a fruit.

7. The confusion arose after the 1890s when the US supreme court named them a vegetable for taxation purposes - a fruit is the edible part of the plant containing seeds, a vegetable is stem, leaf or root.
